What “Secure Cloud Storage” Actually Means

Sync’s current pricing page displays a “Save 50% for 1 year” promotion on the 1 TB and 5 TB plans. The crossed-out amounts appear to be the regular prices, while the lower amounts apply to the first promotional year.

Because the page explicitly limits the 50% reduction to one year, the renewal cost matters more than the headline. pCloud is appealing for reasons that have little to do with encryption terminology. Its desktop app creates a virtual drive, it supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, its mobile apps handle automatic media upload, and its Lifetime plans remove recurring storage bills.
The privacy issue is structural: pCloud’s normal storage and pCloud Encryption are different products.
Standard files are protected in transit with TLS/SSL and at rest with provider-managed AES-256 encryption. To obtain client-side zero-knowledge protection, the user must buy pCloud Encryption, create a Crypto Pass, and place sensitive files inside the Crypto folder. pCloud’s own app page explicitly says this design provides encrypted and non-encrypted folders inside one account.
This hybrid model can be useful. Photos and music can remain in standard storage for easier streaming and previews, while identity documents and contracts go into Crypto. It can also create human error: a file placed in the wrong folder does not receive zero-knowledge protection.
