NordVPN and Surfshark have more in common than their advertising suggests. Both encrypt your internet connection, offer apps for the devices most people use, include a kill switch, support modern VPN protocols, and back their no-logs claims with independent assurance work. They also belong to the same wider corporate group, although the companies say their products and infrastructure remain separate.

The differences become meaningful when you stop asking, “Which VPN has the longest feature list?” and start asking everyday questions. How many devices can your household connect? What will you actually pay today? What happens at renewal? Does split tunneling work on your phone or computer? Which privacy claims have been independently examined? And will the app be simple enough that you leave it switched on?

The short answer

NordVPN is our narrow overall winner for most individuals and couples. Its core service is polished, it has a broader set of specialty connection options, and its no-logs policy has been subjected to six independent assurance engagements. NordVPN also publishes a specific renewal figure beside its current US offers, which makes the long-term cost easier to evaluate. The trade-off is a 10-device simultaneous connection limit and a higher current introductory price.

Surfshark is the better-value choice for families, shared homes, and people with many devices. One subscription supports unlimited simultaneous VPN connections, and the current 27-month Starter offer costs less upfront than NordVPN Basic. Surfshark also gives advanced users flexible tools such as Dynamic MultiHop, Rotating IP, Alternative ID, and split tunneling on more platforms. Its public pricing page, however, does not expose one universal renewal total that we could independently reproduce.

There is no honest universal speed winner. We did not run both services under identical laboratory conditions, and even a controlled test cannot predict every reader’s home connection. Server distance, congestion, protocol, device, Wi-Fi quality, ISP routing, and time of day can all change the result. Use the refund period to test both on the connection and services that matter to you.

How we compared them

This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on speed benchmark. We checked the providers’ live US pricing pages, help centers, terms, privacy policies, published server directories, trust pages, and announcements about independent assurance work. Pricing and product information were checked on August 25, 2026.

That approach is particularly important for VPNs. A provider can publish a large server count or an impressive speed claim, but neither tells you how its app will perform on your fiber line, hotel Wi-Fi, mobile carrier, or overseas route. We therefore do not convert marketing claims into test results.

We gave the greatest weight to:

1. the price charged today and the information available about renewal;
2. practical device and platform limitations;
3. the clarity of the privacy policy;
4. the scope and recency of independent assurance or security assessments;
5. everyday usability and failure protection;
6. features that solve a real problem rather than inflate a checklist.

We also distinguish a VPN from a complete security solution. A VPN protects traffic between your device and the VPN server and changes the public IP address seen by many sites. It does not make you anonymous, stop every phishing attempt, repair an infected device, protect accounts with reused passwords, or override a service’s terms. Pricing: Surfshark wins the first term, NordVPN explains renewal better

VPN pricing pages are designed to make a long commitment feel like a small monthly purchase. In reality, the eye-catching “per month” amount is normally an equivalent rate. You pay the whole first term in advance, and the subscription renews automatically unless you turn that off.

Current long-term introductory offers

These are the US-dollar offers displayed when we checked the official pages on August 25, 2026. Tax or VAT may be added, and localized prices can differ.

The three “extra” months are part of the introductory calculation. They should not be assumed to repeat at renewal. The most useful comparison is therefore not $3.49 versus $2.49 in isolation. It is $94.23 versus $67.23 charged now, followed by the exact renewal terms shown for your purchase.

Surfshark saves $27 on the first 27 months at the entry tier. That is a genuine advantage, especially because Starter covers unlimited simultaneous VPN connections. The current promotion also lists Surfshark One at the same upfront price as Starter, making One the more attractive selection while that offer lasts. Do not assume that temporary parity will remain.

NordVPN deserves credit for displaying renewal totals alongside the current US plans. Surfshark’s terms and support material confirm automatic renewal, but we could not reproduce one universal Surfshark renewal price from its public pricing page. I cannot confirm one universal Surfshark renewal price from the public page. Before paying, capture the checkout screen or confirmation email showing the amount, duration, renewal date, and future price for your location.

NordVPN’s shorter plans

NordVPN’s live US page also displayed the following prices:

The one-year plans were shown with the same annual renewal totals as the corresponding long-term offers: $139.08 for Basic, $219.48 for Complete, and $296.28 for Prime. Offers change frequently, so the live checkout is the final authority.

Surfshark’s public page offered 24-month, 12-month, and one-month selectors, but the accessible page did not provide a reliable set of annual and monthly totals that we could reproduce across sessions. We will not fill that gap with an old price from a blog post or a third-party table.

Refunds and trials are not identical

Both companies advertise 30-day money-back guarantees for eligible initial purchases, but “30 days” is not the whole policy.

NordVPN says new subscriptions can be refunded within 30 days of the first purchase. Purchases through an app store or reseller can be subject to that seller’s process. NordVPN does not offer a standard free trial for purchases on its website; the guarantee is its main try-before-you-keep-it route.

Surfshark’s current support policy applies to a qualifying first purchase made directly or through listed eligible billing partners. It excludes an already renewed subscription, a purchase that has previously been refunded, and specified non-refundable add-ons. App-store rules can apply. Surfshark also offers a seven-day trial for eligible new 12- and 24-month website purchases using supported payment methods. That trial permits up to three devices; a paid subscription permits unlimited connections.

Canceling renewal is not necessarily the same as requesting a refund. Turning off auto-renewal normally leaves the service active until the paid term ends. If you want money back within the eligible window, follow the provider’s refund procedure explicitly.

Pricing verdict

Surfshark wins on introductory value. NordVPN wins on public renewal clarity. If you are buying for a household, Surfshark’s unlimited connections amplify the initial saving. If you dislike billing surprises, NordVPN’s displayed renewal figure is reassuring—but still save your order confirmation because renewal prices can change with notice.

What each plan actually includes

Comparing NordVPN Basic with Surfshark Starter is the fairest VPN-to-VPN match. The higher tiers bundle products that extend beyond the VPN and should be judged separately.

NordVPN Basic, Complete, and Prime

NordVPN Basic is the sensible choice if the VPN is the reason you are buying. It includes the secure VPN connection, support for up to 10 simultaneous devices, the core malicious-domain and scam/phishing protection described on the current plan page, and the specialty connection features available in NordVPN’s apps. A dedicated IP is an optional paid add-on, not a standard private IP reserved for you.

NordVPN Complete adds security and identity-related tools, including a password manager, 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage, and broader malware, tracker, transaction, and personal-information monitoring features. Exact capabilities vary by operating system and region. For example, some advanced protection tools are desktop-only. Do not buy Complete on the assumption that every bullet works identically on an iPhone, Mac, Android phone, and Windows PC.

NordVPN Prime adds Coveron identity-protection benefits. Availability, insurance eligibility, limits, and terms depend on location. It is substantially more expensive at renewal and is unnecessary for someone who only needs a VPN.

Nord’s bundles can be convenient, but convenience is not proof that each included component is the best in its category. If the password manager is the deciding factor, compare it independently with our best password managers for individuals.

Surfshark Starter, One, and One+

Surfshark Starter supplies the VPN and unlimited simultaneous VPN connections. It also includes CleanWeb for blocking many ads, trackers, and malicious domains; Bypasser split tunneling; Rotating IP; Dynamic MultiHop; and Alternative ID, which can generate a separate online persona and masked email address. It is a feature-rich base tier.

Surfshark One adds Surfshark Antivirus, Alert breach monitoring, and related security tools. Some features have device, platform, data-type, or regional limits even though the VPN itself allows unlimited connections. Treat “unlimited devices” as a VPN-connection promise, not a blanket promise that every bundled product can run without limits everywhere.

Surfshark One+ adds the Incogni data-removal service and identity-related benefits where available. Data-broker removal is a different job from VPN protection: it submits removal requests to participating data brokers, while the VPN encrypts your connection. The combination may be useful, but it should not be described as complete removal from the internet.

Bundle verdict

Surfshark Starter includes more experimentation-friendly VPN features at the entry price. NordVPN has the more extensive upgrade path for users who specifically want cloud storage, password management, and additional identity tools. For most readers, the right move is to choose the base VPN first and upgrade only if two or more bundle components replace products you already pay for.

Device limits: Surfshark is the clear household winner

NordVPN permits 10 simultaneous VPN connections per account. Ten is enough for many individuals and couples: a laptop, phone, tablet, TV, work computer, and a few spare devices can all fit. It can become restrictive in a household with several people, multiple televisions, game consoles, streaming sticks, and smart devices.

NordVPN documents one less-obvious rule. If several devices connect to the same NordVPN server, they need to use different protocols within the provider’s connection rules; otherwise some devices may need another server. Most ordinary users will never notice, but it is worth knowing when configuring many devices manually.

A compatible router uses one NordVPN connection slot while protecting devices routed through it. That can extend coverage, but router-level VPNs have trade-offs: setup is more technical, changing locations is less convenient, and per-app exclusions may be unavailable.

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous VPN connections on a paid account. This is its strongest practical advantage. A family can install it on phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, and travel devices without counting slots. “Unlimited” still operates under fair-use and account-sharing terms; it is not permission to resell the service or publish credentials.

Router installation is available with both services, but it should not be your first choice merely to bypass a device limit. Native apps give you better control of the kill switch, server selection, updates, and split tunneling. Surfshark also notes that app-specific tools such as Bypasser and CleanWeb do not transfer in the same way to a manual router configuration.

Winner: Surfshark. If your household could exceed 10 simultaneous devices even occasionally, this result is decisive.

Apps and everyday ease of use

Both services cover the platforms most readers expect: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browser extensions, Android TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV-type environments. Both can also be configured on compatible routers and some other devices through manual setup.

The everyday workflow is similar. Install the app, sign in, allow the operating system to create a VPN configuration, choose the fastest or nearest location, and connect. Both can start with the device and connect automatically on networks you do not trust.

NordVPN’s interface emphasizes a map, a quick-connect action, and a list of countries and specialty servers. It makes the more unusual modes—such as Double VPN or Onion over VPN—easy to find without requiring the user to build a route. That is useful for someone who wants advanced options but does not want to configure them.

Surfshark’s apps feel oriented toward a large household and feature exploration. Favorites, recent locations, static IP options, MultiHop, Rotating IP, Alternative ID, and Bypasser are close at hand. That flexibility can be empowering, although it creates more settings for a newcomer to understand.

The right app is the one that remains connected without disrupting your routine. During the first week, pay attention to four mundane moments: waking a laptop from sleep, switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, joining a video call, and opening banking or payment services. A glossy home screen matters less than reliable recovery from those transitions.

Winner: NordVPN by a small margin for simplicity; Surfshark for people who enjoy more control.

Security and protocols: two strong foundations, different extras

Both providers use modern encryption and support kill switches. A kill switch is important because it can block internet traffic if the VPN tunnel drops unexpectedly. You still need to enable it, understand whether the selected mode blocks all traffic or only specific apps, and test it after major app or operating-system updates.

NordVPN protocols and specialty connections

NordVPN’s default performance-oriented protocol is NordLynx, its implementation built around WireGuard. It also offers OpenVPN, the long-established option useful for compatibility, and NordWhisper, a newer protocol intended for networks that restrict ordinary VPN traffic. No protocol can guarantee access on every filtered network, and local rules still apply.

NordVPN’s specialty tools include:

• Double VPN, which routes traffic through two VPN servers using preset combinations;
• Onion over VPN, which sends the connection from the VPN into the Onion network without requiring a separate first hop from your device;
• obfuscated servers, designed to make VPN traffic less obvious to network filters;
• P2P servers for supported peer-to-peer traffic;
• Meshnet, a private device network for remote access and traffic routing that NordVPN makes available separately from a paid VPN subscription.

NordVPN also supports post-quantum protection with NordLynx on a growing list of desktop, mobile, and TV platforms. Compatibility is not universal: Nord’s support material lists conflicts with modes such as OpenVPN, dedicated IP, obfuscated servers, Meshnet, and Onion over VPN. “Post-quantum” does not mean every possible part of the internet connection has become quantum-proof; it addresses the key-exchange risk within the supported VPN configuration.

Surfshark protocols and specialty connections

Surfshark supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 on supported platforms. It has also introduced Dausos, its own protocol for difficult network environments. Protocol availability varies by operating system.

Its standout connection features include:

• Dynamic MultiHop, where you can choose both the entry and exit location instead of accepting only preset pairs;
• Rotating IP, which changes the VPN exit IP periodically without intentionally dropping the VPN connection;
• NoBorders, which detects network restrictions and surfaces suitable server options;
• Bypasser, Surfshark’s split-tunneling system;
• static IP locations, which provide a consistent shared server address rather than a unique dedicated IP.

Surfshark says post-quantum protection is enabled with supported WireGuard and Dausos connections. As with NordVPN, it is a forward-looking protection, not a substitute for patched devices, secure passwords, multifactor authentication, or encrypted websites.

Does double-hop make either VPN “twice as secure”?

No. Sending traffic through two VPN servers separates entry and exit and may fit a particular threat model, but it can add latency and complexity. It does not double encryption in a simple numerical sense, make unsafe websites safe, or create anonymity. Most people are better served by a nearby single-hop server, a working kill switch, and consistent use.

Security verdict: tie for the core. NordVPN wins for the breadth and accessibility of specialty routes. Surfshark wins for customizable MultiHop and Rotating IP. Choose the special feature you will actually use, not the longest bullet list.

Split tunneling: Surfshark is more flexible across platforms

Split tunneling lets selected apps or websites bypass the VPN, or lets only selected traffic use it. It is useful when a bank dislikes VPN addresses, a printer lives on the local network, a work app requires a normal connection, or a video service needs your ordinary location.

NordVPN offers split tunneling on Windows, Android, Android TV, and its browser extensions. Its support documentation says the native feature is not available in the NordVPN apps for iOS and macOS. Workarounds and browser-only routing are not equivalent to native per-app control.

Surfshark calls the feature Bypasser and has expanded it across major desktop and mobile systems, including newer macOS and iOS implementations. The exact choices differ by platform: an app exclusion, a route-via-VPN mode, and website bypassing may not all appear on every device.

Do not casually exclude a password manager, email client, or browser from the tunnel just to fix one difficult site. Prefer a narrow exception for the affected app or domain and retest it after updates.

Winner: Surfshark. Its broader current platform coverage makes it easier to solve ordinary compatibility problems.

Privacy policies, jurisdiction, and independent checks

This is the section where marketing shorthand causes the most confusion. “No logs” should not mean “the company knows nothing about any customer.” A paid VPN normally needs an account identifier, subscription status, and payment-related records. The important question is whether it retains browsing activity or connection data that can reconstruct what you did through the VPN.

NordVPN: Panama service jurisdiction and six assurance engagements

NordVPN says its VPN service is based in and operates under the jurisdiction of Panama. Its parent company, Nord Security, is based in the Netherlands. The VPN privacy policy says NordVPN does not retain browsing activity, traffic, used bandwidth, or originating IP information from VPN use in a way that would create activity logs.

At the end of 2025, Deloitte Lithuania performed NordVPN’s sixth independent no-logs reasonable-assurance engagement under ISAE 3000 (Revised). The work examined systems as they operated between November 10 and December 12, 2025, including standard, Double VPN, obfuscated, and Onion over VPN servers, along with configuration and deployment processes. Deloitte concluded that the examined systems and supporting operations were designed and implemented in line with NordVPN’s no-logs statement. Subscribers can access the complete technical report in their Nord Account.

That is meaningful evidence, especially because the process has been repeated. It is still a point-in-time assurance engagement commissioned by NordVPN, not permanent surveillance of every server or a guarantee against every future failure. The careful conclusion is that the assessed controls matched the stated policy during the covered period.

Surfshark: Netherlands jurisdiction and a precise temporary-data disclosure

Surfshark B.V. is based in the Netherlands. Its current privacy policy says it does not collect visited IP addresses, browsing history, used bandwidth, network traffic, or other information that would reveal online activity.

The same policy includes an important qualification: for service functionality, VPN servers may temporarily keep a user ID and/or originating IP address plus connection timestamps for a specific VPN server. Surfshark says this information is deleted automatically within 15 minutes after the session ends. It separately retains normal account and subscription information while the subscription is active and generally for two years after the last login.

This does not mean Surfshark keeps browsing histories; its policy explicitly says it does not store the websites visited. It does mean the most accurate description is more nuanced than “zero data exists at any moment.” Readers with a sensitive threat model should consider the temporary connection-data window.

Deloitte examined Surfshark’s adherence to its no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025. Surfshark says the later work covered standard, static, and multiport VPN servers plus configuration and deployment processes. The full ISAE 3000 report is available to account holders. Surfshark’s Trust Center also lists a SecuRing infrastructure assessment completed in December 2025, which reported no critical vulnerabilities in the vendor’s summary, and a 2026 Cure53 assessment of infrastructure and the Dausos protocol.

As with NordVPN, these are useful independent checks with defined scopes and dates—not a promise that software can never contain a vulnerability.

Same group, separate services

Nord Security and Surfshark announced a merger agreement in 2022. Their public statements said the companies would continue operating autonomously with separate infrastructure, product roadmaps, and brands. The shared group matters because NordVPN and Surfshark should not be treated as two completely unrelated corporate bets. It does not make their prices, policies, apps, or networks identical.

Is Panama automatically private and the Netherlands automatically bad?

No. Jurisdiction affects the legal environment, but a country label is only one layer. The decisive questions are what the service records, how systems are built, what valid orders can compel, how transparently the company describes those processes, and whether independent reviewers have examined the implementation.

NordVPN receives the edge because of Panama service jurisdiction, the longer assurance history, and the absence of a comparable disclosed 15-minute post-session connection-data window in the materials we reviewed. Surfshark remains a credible privacy option with repeated Deloitte work and RAM-only infrastructure, but its precise temporary-data disclosure should be part of an informed decision.

Privacy winner: NordVPN. The gap is meaningful for high-sensitivity users but not a reason to portray Surfshark as logging browsing activity.

Servers and performance: numbers do not choose the faster VPN

NordVPN’s official server directory listed 8,471 servers covering 149 countries and described 224 locations when checked. Surfshark advertised more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries, with 10 Gbps capacity and RAM-only operation across its network.

NordVPN therefore has the larger published footprint in both server count and country count. That can help if you need a location Surfshark lacks or want more nearby options. It does not prove that every NordVPN location is physical, less congested, or faster for you. VPN networks mix physical and virtual locations, capacity changes, and one lightly loaded Surfshark server can outperform a distant or busy NordVPN server—and vice versa.

We cannot confirm that NordVPN or Surfshark will be faster on your connection. A trustworthy personal test looks like this:

1. Use the same computer, network, and protocol.
2. Record the connection without a VPN.
3. Test the nearest server city on each VPN three times.
4. Repeat during a busy evening period, not only at noon.
5. Compare latency, download, upload, connection time, and stability.
6. Make a video call and stream the services you actually use.
7. Put the device to sleep, wake it, and confirm the VPN reconnects.
8. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data and test again on your phone.

A tiny difference in a speed-test peak matters less than stable calls, quick reconnection, and no unexplained disconnections. If one service is consistently better on your route, that is more relevant than a global average from someone else’s laboratory.

Performance verdict: no universal winner. NordVPN wins published geographic breadth; test real speed locally.

Streaming, television apps, and changing access rules

Both VPNs offer apps for popular television platforms and promote streaming access. NordVPN integrates SmartPlay into its apps to combine VPN routing with DNS handling. Surfshark offers native TV apps and location tools of its own.

We do not guarantee that either service will access a particular streaming library. Streaming companies continuously change detection systems, licensing restrictions differ by region, and a server that works today can fail tomorrow. A VPN subscription also does not grant rights to content or override a platform’s terms.

For everyday streaming, judge four things:

• whether the VPN has a native app for your television or streaming box;
• whether the nearest suitable location works with your paid services;
• whether the picture reaches the quality your connection normally supports;
• whether the app reconnects after the TV sleeps or changes network.

Surfshark’s unlimited-device policy is particularly convenient in a home with several televisions and streaming sticks. NordVPN’s 10 slots are still enough for many households, and its simple specialty/server selection reduces setup friction.

Streaming verdict: tie on documented capability. Surfshark has the device-count advantage; real access must be tested.

Public Wi-Fi and travel

A VPN is most useful on networks you do not control: airports, hotels, cafés, coworking spaces, and shared accommodation. HTTPS already encrypts the content of most modern web sessions, but a VPN adds a tunnel for device traffic to the VPN server and reduces what the local network can observe.

NordVPN’s NordWhisper and obfuscated servers are designed for networks that interfere with standard VPN connections. Surfshark responds with NoBorders and its Dausos protocol. Neither provider can promise operation in every country, office, school, hotel, or captive portal.

Before travel:

• install and sign in to the apps while you still have a reliable connection;
• download updates and save setup instructions offline;
• enable auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi;
• learn how to pause the VPN for a captive-portal login, then reconnect;
• save at least two protocols and nearby server countries to try;
• check local laws and workplace or school policies.

NordVPN’s ready-made specialty modes make it the slightly easier travel recommendation. Surfshark is more convenient for a family carrying many connected devices.

Travel verdict: NordVPN for one person’s toolkit; Surfshark for a device-heavy group.

Blocking ads, trackers, malicious sites, and scams

NordVPN and Surfshark both include DNS- or app-level tools that can block many known advertising, tracking, or malicious domains. NordVPN divides some of its protection by plan and platform, while Surfshark includes CleanWeb at the Starter level and adds broader antivirus and monitoring tools in One.

These features are useful layers, not guarantees. A blocklist may miss a new phishing domain, allow a false negative, or break a legitimate page. Browser protections, operating-system updates, a reputable password manager, multifactor authentication, and skepticism toward urgent messages still matter.

The bundle naming can also blur different technologies. Blocking a malicious domain is not the same as scanning a downloaded file. Breach monitoring does not prevent a breach. Antivirus does not protect every device merely because the VPN offers unlimited connections. Read the platform list for the exact feature you want.

Winner: tie at the base VPN level. Surfshark gives more tools in Starter; NordVPN’s higher tiers build a broader ecosystem. The better choice depends on which tools you already own.

Everyday situations: which one fits you?

You live alone and use five or six devices

Choose NordVPN Basic if you value the simpler overall recommendation, specialty servers, a longer no-logs assurance record, and published renewal pricing. Ten connections give you room to grow without paying for bundle extras.

Choose Surfshark Starter if introductory cost matters more, you want Rotating IP or Dynamic MultiHop, or native split tunneling on an Apple platform is important.

You share a home with several people

Choose Surfshark. Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections remove the need to count phones, laptops, TVs, and tablets. Confirm that sharing within your household complies with the current account terms and protect the account with multifactor authentication.

You need split tunneling on macOS or iOS

Choose Surfshark, subject to checking the exact Bypasser mode available in the current app. NordVPN’s own documentation does not list native split tunneling for its macOS and iOS apps.

You have a sensitive privacy threat model

Choose NordVPN between these two, primarily because of its longer independent assurance history, Panama service jurisdiction, and the data-retention distinction in the current policies. Still verify whether a commercial VPN is sufficient for your risks. Journalists, activists, and people facing targeted surveillance may need professional security guidance, compartmentalized identities, hardened devices, and tools beyond a consumer VPN.

You want a VPN plus antivirus and monitoring

Compare NordVPN Complete with Surfshark One, not Basic with Starter. List the devices each extra feature supports, remove duplicates with products you already buy, and calculate the renewal—not only the first term. Surfshark One is unusually attractive while it is promoted at the same first-term price as Starter, but that offer can end.

You mainly want streaming

Either can work, but do not choose from a provider’s universal-sounding claim. Test your exact services, location, television platform, and picture quality during the refund window. Surfshark is easier to deploy across many TVs; NordVPN offers a straightforward SmartPlay-based experience.

You often work from hotels and cafés

Choose NordVPN if you want preset obfuscation and NordWhisper options close at hand. Choose Surfshark if you travel with a large family or device collection. In both cases, enable auto-connect and test the kill switch before leaving.

You need a stable IP for allowlists or banking

First try a nearby standard server and split tunneling for the sensitive app. If you need an address reserved for you, investigate each provider’s paid dedicated-IP option and its privacy implications. A dedicated IP is easier to associate with one account than a shared exit IP, so convenience and anonymity pull in opposite directions.

The setup we recommend after subscribing

The safest configuration is not the most complicated one. Start with a stable baseline:
